Every day spent with me is a day spent pausing and looking up. I’m not entirely sure if this is something I’ve started since painting full-time, or whether I have always been slightly outside the conversation, a part of my brain focusing only on what is above me. I never fail to take a sharp intake of breath when faced with the changing light, colour and scale of what is around us.
Rebecca Morris is an expressionist landscape and sky artist, living and working in the Cotswolds. After initially studying art and photography, Rebecca changed direction and followed a career in broadcast journalism and television presenting. She returned to her artistic roots more than ten years ago and now paints full-time, working out of her studio in Cheltenham and often painting to commission.
Rebecca uses fluid acrylics to create low-lying landscapes and impressive skies quickly and intuitively. She works on large canvases and builds up multiple thin layers using oversized brushes, pulling the paint to and fro across the canvas in bold strokes to create washes and stains, before enhancing and deepening areas of colour with oil pigment bars. In her ‘little white house’ series, Rebecca introduces naïve clusters of cottages on her hillsides to offer the viewer a sense of place.
Driven by a desire to interpret and recreate the perspective gained from walking the hills around her home Rebecca says, “every day spent with me is a day spent pausing and looking up. I’m not entirely sure if this is something I’ve started since painting full-time, or whether I have always been slightly outside the conversation, a part of my brain focusing only on what is above me. I never fail to take a sharp intake of breath when faced with the changing light, colour and scale of what is around us.”
