Eun Vivian Lee

Eun Vivian Lee is a contemporary artist whose work explores the capabilities of hanji—traditional Korean paper, historically used as a medium for writing and creating walls and everyday objects. Through this organic medium, Lee delves into themes of resilience, femininity, and personal reflection. Born in Seoul, South Korea, she lived the last 20 years in New York City and now travels between Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, and New York City for work.

The torn and stacked layers of hanji integrate Lee’s inspiration from nature—oceans, sunsets, mountains, which are physical emblems for the passage of time. The ripples of water reflect the tears of hanji, and her overall pieces often express Lee’s reconciliation (or lack thereof) between nature’s inherent peacefulness and unpredictability. Lee’s work is in itself a meditation on healing.

She studied Computer Graphics as an undergraduate at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn New York and has a master’s degree in Interactive Media Telecommunications from New York University, New York City. She was a programmer for years before becoming a full-time artist. You can find a lot of media/programming influences in her work.
